Caravaggio, one of the most famous painters in Rome, was a real bad boy of the Baroque era. Bernini on the other hand, was the greatest sculptor of the 17th century and an outstanding architect as well. Both of their names are synonymous with the Baroque era, an important era full of great masterpieces that you will discover during our tour.
The first stop of our tour is Chiesa di Santa Maria del Popolo, where your tour guide will show you the works of several famous artists, such as Raphael, Gian Lorenzo Bernini, Caravaggio, Alessandro Algardi, Pinturicchio, Andrea Bregno, Guillaume de Marcillat and Donato Bramante. We can easily say that this church is a real gem.
Next, we will stop in Piazza di Spagna, one of the most famous squares in Rome, with the Barcaccia Fountain in the middle. The guide will tell you the history behind this symbol of Rome and you will have time to take some memorable pictures with the popular Spanish Steps.
Continuing with the tour, we will discover Chiesa of St. Louis of the French. Located not far from Piazza Navona, this is the national church of France in Rome. The French character is visible from the exterior itself, which has several statues recalling national history. The interior also has frescoes by Charles-Joseph Natoire recounting stories of Saint Louis IX, Saint Denis and Clovis. We will also discover here famous paintings by Caravaggio and “Histories of Saint Cecilia” by Domenichino. After that, we will go straight to the Church of St. Augustine. First conceived in 1286, the church is known for its roman renaissance architecture style, artworks by artists such as Caravaggio, Raphael, Guercino and Bernini, and for being the burial place of Saint Monica, mother of Saint Augustine of Hippo.
Last but not least, we will visit the famous Piazza Navona, one of the largest and most beautiful squares in Rome. Defined during the fifteenth century, this Baroque-style square is best known for “Fountain of the Four Rivers” by Bernini.
